About Pump.co

Cloud spend is a whopping $500 billion/yr, the biggest growing expense category for any tech company - tackling these costs requires continuous effort and time from DevOps teams.

Pump is a building the fastest way to save ~60% on cloud spend. Our AI-powered platform not only fully automates savings but we also leverage the power of group buying for even greater discounts. Our mission is to use AI to transform the status quo of cloud cost optimization.

We are backed by Y Combinator and our founding team consists of seasoned entrepreneurs with prior exits. We have a transparent, collaborative and a fast-paced culture that prioritizes winning with a flat organizational structure.

About the role

We’re looking for a Head of Engineering to take Pump from a scrappy, high-performing team to a world-class engineering org. We’ve gone from $0 to $XXM+ ARR in under two years with a lean team of just 9 engineers, and now we need the right leader to help us scale to $XXXM+ ARR and beyond.

Our mission is to automate cloud cost optimization with AI, making human-driven cloud consulting obsolete. Our customers save ~60% on AWS and GCP costs instantly, and Azure. We’re growing fast, competing (and winning) against well-funded incumbents, and have built a business that scales efficiently without bloated sales teams or overpriced consultants.

Why this role

  • Build from the ground up – The foundation is strong, but there’s a lot of room to shape the team, culture, and tech.
  • High ownership, high impact – Engineering at Pump isn’t a cost center; it’s the product. The decisions you make will directly impact our growth.
  • AI-first company – We’re not bolting on AI; we’re built around it. Our technical challenges aren’t trivial, and we’re solving real problems with real automation.
  • No legacy baggage – We move fast and iterate. You won’t be stuck rewriting decade-old tech debt.

What you’ll do

  • Scale the team from 9 to 30+ engineers, ensuring we hire fast while keeping the quality bar high.
  • Drive technical strategy and own the architecture, scalability, and reliability of our AI-driven cloud optimization platform.
  • Lead by example. This isn’t just a people-management role. We want someone hands-on initially who can set the technical bar before transitioning into more leadership as we scale.
  • Mentor and develop talent while fostering a high-performance, ownership-driven culture.
  • Build a product engineers love. Our customers are technical (DevOps, engineers, CTOs), so the UX and API experience need to be best-in-class.

Who you are

  • 9-15 years of experience (graduated 2010-2015), with experience leading 15+ engineers.
  • Have built and scaled teams before—ideally, you’ve led engineering at a $30M+ ARR startup or scaled a team from Series A to Series C.
  • Still hands-on (for now). You don’t need to be coding daily, but you should be comfortable rolling up your sleeves when needed.
  • Deep backend and infrastructure experience. You’ve built and scaled products used by 1,000+ customers (not just internal tools).
  • AI-curious. You don’t need to be an ML expert, but you should be excited about AI-driven automation.
  • Cloud-savvy. You have deep knowledge of AWS, GCP, and Azure.
  • Data-driven leader. You make decisions based on metrics, not just gut feel.
  • High execution, low ego. We value merit over politics. If you need fancy titles and layers of process, this won’t be a fit.

Why Pump

  • $XXM+ ARR and growing fast. We’re not in survival mode; we’re scaling efficiently.
  • Lean, high-impact team. No layers of bureaucracy—your work moves the needle.
  • Ownership and autonomy. You’ll have real decision-making power.
  • Competitive comp and meaningful equity. We want you to share in the upside.
  • No BS culture. We’re direct, we move fast, and we don’t do politics.

This is a rare opportunity to build something big with a team that executes. If this sounds like your kind of challenge, we’d love to chat.

Let’s build.
