About the role

About the Role

As a Growth Engineer at Openlayer, you’ll play a pivotal role in driving user acquisition, engagement, and retention. You will work closely with our product, marketing, and data teams to identify growth opportunities, experiment with new ideas, and optimize the user journey. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply technical skills to impact Openlayer’s growth directly, working in a fast-paced, data-driven environment focused on scaling a leading AI/ML platform.

What You’ll Do

Develop and Optimize Growth Initiatives: Design and implement experiments across the product and website to test growth hypotheses, improve conversion rates, and drive key user actions.

Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with product, design, and marketing teams to align on growth opportunities, contribute to the roadmap, and enhance the user experience based on data insights.

Analyze and Report: Use analytics and experimentation tools to measure the success of growth experiments. Share insights with the team and iterate quickly on successful strategies.

Automate and Scale: Build automated systems and tools to optimize user acquisition, engagement, and retention efforts at scale, enhancing efficiency across growth operations.

Stay Agile and Experiment: Continuously brainstorm and develop new growth strategies, working in short sprints to implement and test ideas quickly, measure impact, and iterate.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: 3+ years in a growth engineering, software engineering, or product engineering role, ideally in a high-growth SaaS environment.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in JavaScript, Python, or similar; experience with web technologies (React, Node.js), analytics tools (Google Analytics, Mixpanel), and A/B testing platforms.
  • Data-Driven Mindset: Strong analytical skills with a track record of using data to drive decision-making and optimize user experiences.
  • Experimentation: Experience running A/B tests and using metrics to guide product development and growth efforts.
  • Creative Problem Solver: An innovative thinker who can ideate and test new growth strategies and contribute to an experimental culture.
  • Collaborative: Able to work effectively with cross-functional teams, sharing insights and aligning on growth goals.

  • Next.js + Typescript

Backend

  • Flask + SQL (Postgres) + RQ workers for long-running tasks. We are deployed on AWS but offer an on-prem, cloud-agnostic version of the product. Several SoTA ML models used to generate insights and data-centric tests.
Interview Process

Our interview process is designed to be efficient, transparent, and focused on finding the right fit for both Openlayer and the candidate. At each phase, we will be quick to make decisions and provide feedback.

Phone Screen

This is an informal conversation to get to know each other. We’ll discuss the Growth Engineer role, your technical background, and experience with growth initiatives in SaaS or tech, ideally in AI or ML. This is also an opportunity for you to learn more about Openlayer and determine if this role aligns with your career goals.

Technical & Growth Strategy Discussion

In this stage, you’ll have a remote conversation with a senior engineer or growth lead to discuss your approach to implementing growth strategies. We’ll explore your experience with data-driven decision-making, experimentation (A/B testing), and optimizing the user journey to drive engagement and conversion. This conversation helps us understand your technical approach and creativity in leveraging growth opportunities.

Technical Assessment

This part of the interview includes a practical coding assessment focused on implementing a growth-focused feature or running an experiment. You’ll work on a problem that involves creating or optimizing a small web feature or analytics integration, and you may use any tools or resources you'd typically work with. This assessment allows us to evaluate your problem-solving skills, coding proficiency, and ability to create impactful growth solutions.

Founders Chat

As a Growth Engineer, you will work closely with Openlayer’s leadership team. In this stage, you’ll meet with one of our founders to discuss your background, motivations, and experience working in fast-paced environments. This conversation also gives you the opportunity to learn more about Openlayer’s mission, values, and culture, and for us to assess alignment with our long-term goals.

On-site Interviews

The on-site portion of the interview process is designed to explore your technical and strategic skills, communication style, and fit with our team. This round includes:

  1. Technical Problem Solving & Experimentation: You’ll discuss your approach to designing and implementing growth experiments, optimizing user flows, and using data to drive decisions. This interview focuses on your ability to iterate quickly, learn from results, and improve on ideas.
  2. Cross-functional Collaboration: Given the close collaboration between growth, product, and marketing teams, you’ll meet with leaders from these departments. This interview will focus on how you leverage insights from different teams to enhance growth initiatives and drive adoption.
  3. Analytics & Data Interpretation: We’ll discuss your experience with analytics platforms, A/B testing tools, and metrics tracking. This interview will explore how you interpret data, set KPIs, and make data-informed decisions for growth initiatives.
  4. Final Founder Interview: In this final interview, you’ll meet with one of our founders again to discuss your motivations, long-term goals, and vision for your role at Openlayer. This is a chance to ask any remaining questions and gain a deeper understanding of our company’s culture and mission.

We’ll host the on-site interviews at our SF office, with lunch provided to meet additional team members. (If necessary, we cover travel and accommodations.) We may shorten or adjust the interview process based on our assessment at each stage.

Timing
