About Verdn

Our mission is to Ctrl+Z global ecosystem collapse. Everything we do is driven by that goal.

At Verdn, every task you do will directly or indirectly enable more positive impact in the world. We’ve already planted 750,000 trees, and recovered 200,000 kg of ocean-bound plastic, but that’s barely scratching the surface of where we’re going in the months and years ahead.

We’re a small team, which means you’ll have an outsized influence on product, culture, and company trajectory. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about business functions beyond your role, engage directly with customers and NGOs, and much more.

Verdn is funded by YC, Fin Capital, Collaborative, Correlation, Notion, Gaingels, Climate Capital, and angels like Peter Livingston (Unpopular VC).

Come and join Verdn as we grow our team!

We're looking for ambitious programmers who are excited by the idea of having an instrumental impact on both our product and the environment.

How we work

We are trialling fully-remote after being in-person for 2.5 years. Chris (CEO) is based in London while Rory (CTO) and James (engineer) are based in GMT+8. Depending on how remote works for us as a team, we may ultimately ask you to relocate to either the UK or the US (w/ visa) by mid-2025. We can discuss this in detail with you individually as part of an application.

In a nutshell...

Verdn is an API that lets companies pledge to sustainable causes with one POST call. Companies use Verdn to pledge with high-value user actions such, e.g. 2 trees planted with a product purchase, or 1 kg ocean plastic with a newsletter signup.

We take care of end-user journeys too — each pledge comes with a Verdn timeline to track its impact. See an example here.

About you

  • 🌍 You want your code to make a positive change to the world, and are eager to join a small, growing team where you can influence the trajectory of the product.
  • 🔨 You have ~2+ years' experience (doesn’t have to be at a job) building web applications with React and Node, with major contributions to project planning and deployment.
    • Ideally — you have something to show for this experience, such as a portfolio site, or a GitHub profile with open source projects or contributions.
  • ⚡️ You've created server-side functionality using best practices, and understand how to build systems by yourself.

What the job involves

  • You'll have a high degree of autonomy to work on new features across our stack.
  • We like to iterate on our product quickly, so you'll be prototyping and releasing rapidly.
  • Because we're a nimble and ambitious, you'll see how the whole business works, as well as talking to our customers.
  • If it's a good fit for you, you are in a great position to manage others as we grow our engineering team further.

P.S. There'll be time for fun, hacky things like building features with novel web technologies, and exploring technically ambitious demos.

Our stack

  • We work exclusively with TypeScript on both the back and front end.
  • Most stuff runs on a Next.js monolith, hosted on Vercel.
  • We use Drizzle + Postgres for our database, hosted on Neon.
Technology

We're big fans of Next.js, using it on the front and back end. We're also having fun with Drizzle and Neon on the database side.

Interview Process

Because Verdn is a small team right now, we're trying to keep our hiring process as efficient possible for both sides!

Non-technical video call

Our first point of contact will be a 20-minute video call, mainly to get to know each other and to see if we think there is potential for a fit for you to work with us.

Technical video call (1 hour)

We'll spend 30 minutes walking through an Advent of Code-style problem that involves analyzing string input and output data using TypeScript. You'll be expected to write some code here — but we will focus mainly on how you think about and approach problems. We'll also spend 30 minutes having a general engineering discussion, which will be a chance for you to find more about how we work on software at Verdn.

Team experience (all-day)

You'll be invited to spend a day (remote) working with us, which will involve meeting both founders for an interview, and then working alongside the whole team on a task for the day.

The task you'll work on will be a real problem from our codebase, and we'll use it as a chance to see how we might work together day-to-day. We'll compensate you for your time based on a day-rate that we agree on in advance.

Decision

We'll let you know about our decision as soon as possible, usually within a couple of days post-interview(s).
