About Maia

Maia is an AI relationship app that keeps couples together by helping them connect more each day. Trained by relationship experts, Maia offers daily activities, personalized advice, proactive insights, quizzes and games through AI and relationship science.

About the role

About Maia

At Maia, we believe that AI has the potential to transform relationships for the better. Our mobile app is already helping thousands of couples grow closer, and we’re just getting started. As we expand, we’re looking to develop AI models that deeply integrate therapeutic practices, creating an even more impactful experience for our users.

The Role

We’re seeking a founding engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can work across our tech stack (React Native, FastAPI, AWS). Experience with machine learning is a plus.

As our founding engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of Maia:

  • Expand and Innovate: Develop new features that delight and support all types of couples, ensuring that Maia continues to be a valuable tool in their relationship journey.
  • Lead AI Integration: Advance our AI conversational system by refining and expanding both solo and group chat functionalities.
  • Build and Scale: Create and iterate on ML models to broaden our product’s use cases, always with an eye on how AI can enhance relationship wellness.
  • Influence Product Direction: Work closely with the founding team to continuously explore new opportunities to apply ML in innovative ways to the world of relationships.

Our Values

Our mission is simple: to empower couples all over the world to build stronger bonds, communicate more effectively, and enjoy a fulfilling relationship without the stigma often associated with seeking help.

We’re looking for a fast learner who is excited about taking on significant technical responsibility. You’ll be the key decision-maker for all things tech, from architecture to implementation. Things move quickly here, and adaptability is crucial. Above all, you must have a deep appreciation for the importance of nurturing better relationships through technology.

About You

  • Proven Experience: You’ve built an app that’s live and being used by real people.
  • Technical Expertise: Full stack development, some knowledge of ML (e.g. what a fully connected layer is, how attention works).
  • Passion for Relationships: You care about the impact technology has on personal well-being. Whether you have direct experience with relationship therapy or wellness, or you’re eager to explore how technology can enhance these areas, you’re motivated by the potential to make a real difference in people’s lives.
  • Cultural Fit: You value empathy, communication, and emotional intelligence. You’re excited about the prospect of working in a space where understanding and nurturing human connections are at the forefront.
  • Location: This role is based in San Francisco, and you’ll be expected to work in person with the team.

Sample Post-Hire Plan

  • Week 1: Get up to speed on our current architecture, including our novel conversational system. Understand the nuances of our user interactions and how our AI responds.
  • Week 2: Collaborate with the founders to design a new AI-based feature. Launch an internal test by the end of the week.
  • Week 3: Gather user feedback, iterate on the new feature, and prepare it for public launch. Work with designers to ensure it’s polished, then push it live, triage issues, track metrics, and repeat.

Why Join Us?

At Maia, we’re at an exciting juncture. Our product is growing, and we’re on a mission to revolutionize how people build and maintain their relationships. As the technical lead, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the direction of our product and make a lasting impact on couples everywhere.

If you’re interested, please send us your resume and the link to an app you’ve built.
